Writing is considered as a complex process; therefore it is easy for students to become entangled in many complicated issues such as idea generation, word choice, spelling, grammar etc. To overcome those problems, teachers need to improve their strategies in teaching writing. Response journals can be an alternative technique in teaching writing to improve students’ writing skills. The research method of this study is qualitative. The subjects of the study were two teachers of SMPN 1 Bangkalan and SMP 4 Bangkalan who applied the response journal. The result was quite different in implementing it. The teacher In SMPN 1 Bangkalan used the response journal as the collection of students’ writing in responding the reading texts or stories while in SMPN 4 Bangkalan, the students wrote the reflection or opinion about the learning process in the class.
