THE DEMAND OF ENGLISH BY INDONESIAN NUTRITIONISTS WORKING IN INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALS AT SURABAYA

ABSTRACT

Nutritionists’ communicative skill becomes one of important competence to provide care to patients in international hospitals. The purpose of the study was to investigate English communicative skills needs for nutritionists working in international hospital, to find out nutritionists’ perception of their present English communicative skills, to compare the discrepancy between needs and their present English communicative skills, and to propose the development of English for nutritionist course. Six nutritionists working in different hospitals were the subject of the study. The data for the study were collected using questionnaire and observations. The results show that the skill of ‘interviewing foreign patients a food/nutrition-related history’ is highly needed by the nutritionists. They perceive that their present English communicative skills is between poor and fair. Yet, their actual English communicative skills in interviewing foreign patients is poor. To overcome this discrepancy, the syllabus of English for nutritionist need to be developed based on the nutritionists’ suggestion on needs. It can be concluded that a new English for nutritionist course design and internship program at international hospitals are needed to increase nutritionists’ English communicative skills
