 ABSTRACT

Malamang is a tradition of Minangkabaunese in West Sumatera. It is a tradition of cooking pulut rice served in customary activities such as welcoming Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, engagement, marriage, Batagak Panghulu, Mauluik nabi and other traditions. Malamang uses stems of bamboo trees as containers of pulut rice. The existence of bamboo trees is decreasing due to increased land conversion of increasing population. Furthermore, this article uses descriptive writing method by analyzing various literature sources and research results. The results of the analysis show that Malamang tradition contains local wisdom value in the fields of economy, environmental preservation and cultural planting of minangkabau culture. Malamang tradition can be used as a teaching material supplement by adjusting core competencies in high school geography curriculum. In addition, Malamang tradition also contributes to conservation of the existence of bamboo trees.
