THE PROFILE OF MATHEMATICAL LITERACY OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER CANDIDATES IN TERMS OF MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

ABSTRACT Survey of students’ mathematical abilities by PISA is called mathematical literacy. The term “literacy” within the PISA framework emphasizes that mathematical knowledge and skills that focus on students’ mathematical knowledge are functionally utilized in a variety of contexts and reflectively, creatively and broadly. However, the reality in the field at this time some countries still show that the usefulness of mathematics is based only on knowledge and skills learned and practiced through the types of problems that appear in school textbooks and classrooms .. PISA (2000) defines mathematical literacy as a person’s ability to Formulate, apply, and interpret mathematics in a variety of contexts, including the ability to reason. Students of mathematics teacher candidates have a very important role in meeting the needs of professional math teachers. Such competencies should be integrated into programs organized by universities. Prospective teachers are students who follow the program at the Institute of Education Teaching Personnel (LPTK), so that prospective math teacher is a LPTK student who majored in mathematics education. This study aims to describe the profile of mathematics literacy of prospective teachers based on the level of high, medium and low math skills
