INDIVIDUAL-PSYCHOLOGY OF HEDONISTIC LIFESTYLE IN WILDE’S THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY AND FITZGERALD’S THE BEAUTIFUL AND DAMNED

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the individual-psychology. How inferiority complex is depicted in the main character in those novles; how superiority complex leads the main characters to overcome their inferiority complex; and how main characters are described as the portrayal of hedonistist. It focuses on individual-psychology by Alfred Adler and on the concept of “new” hedonism to reveal the typology of hedonistic lifestyle. The results of the study indicate that the main characters of parental; the superiority complex is described through the main character’s attempt to be a perfect man and to be recognized. Dorian keeps improving his physical attractivenes and Anthony keeps seeking financial prosperity. Dorian’s and Anthony characterlead to the folk hedonism, value hedonism, motivational hedonism and hedonistic egoismbonce superiority is achieved. Both novels gives proof that hedonistic lifestyle connects with individual psychology.
