FUNTASTIC (FUN TASKS AND TRICKS): DESIGNING AN ENGLISH MODULE FOR 8TH GRADE STUDENTS – A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed to (1) investigate the quality of existing materials to teach English for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Surakarta, and (2) develope English supplementary textbook for the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Surakarta. A Research and Development study was conducted by doing 2 steps in the implementation; (a) exploration stage, which consisted of library research, book analysis, and need analysis. (b) model development stage, which consisted of designing the draft prototype, experts judgment, try out, and final product. Data were collected by doing document analysis, observation, questionnaire, interview, expert’s judgment sheet and forum group discussion. The result showed that the existing English materials in the 8th grade students of SMP 5 Surakarta had some weaknesses and the proposed book completed the weaknesses based on the exploration stage
